13th College Day Celebrations - 15th March 2008
The Hindustan College of Arts and Science, celebrated its 13th College Day at a gala function organised at M.G.R HALL in Hindustan College of Engineering campus, Padur on Saturday ( 15 th March, 2008 ).

presided over the function. The other dignitaries include Dr. Susan Marthandan ( Director, HCAS), Dr. Prem C Marthandan (Director – Projects, HGI), Dr. Cecilia Thangarajan ( Principal, HCAS) and Mr. Samuel Sampath Kumar ( Vice Principal, HCAS).
The celebrations began at 10. 30 a.m. Mr. Samuel Sampath Kumar welcomed the gathering. Dr. Cecilia Thangarajan, Principal, HCAS, presented the annual report. She spoke about the achievements of the staff and students and about the various programs conducted by the departments during the last academic year. Dr. Susan Marthandan and Dr. Prem C Marthandan gave the felicitation address.
In the chief guest's address,
Dr. S Ramachandran spoke about the challenges and opportunities in the higher education sector. He also spoke about the choice based credit system to be introduced for the first time in the University. The new system would facilitate the students to choose their subjects making them not just educated but employable too. He reiterated the value of education and the need of inter- disciplinary curriculum. A unique feature of the event was the unveiling of the College website, designed by Mr. Thanigaivel and Mr. Alex P John of the Department of Electronic Media, by the Chief Guest.
The chief guest handed over the awards and prizes to students and members of the faculty who have excelled their year.
Mr. Magesh, HOD, Department of Bio Informatics and Mrs. S Malarvizhi, HOD, Department of Electronic Media received the awards for best department in PG and UG respectively. Ms. Shrestha Das
of II Msc. Bioinformatics gave vote of thanks. The students then dazzled the dignitaries with cultural performances .

Department Symposiums
SOUL ‘08, an Inter-collegiate Literary Meet organized by the Department of Languages on 26.2.2008 began with an inaugural function in which Kalaimamani Dr.Kavikko Abdul Rahman, an eminent Tamil scholar, delivered the inaugural address, Dr.Cecilia Thangarajan , the Principal, welcomed the gathering and Dr. P.V.Susila, HOD, Department of Languages introduced the office bearers and Mr.M.T.Maharaja Pillai, Lecturer in Tamil proposed the vote of thanks. The inaugural came to an end by 11.45am.

The competitions were Creative writing in English, Elocution in English, Oratorical in Tamil, Story writing in Hindi, Essay Writing in Malayalam, Essay Writing in Arabic, and Poetry Reading in French. More than 100 participants from various colleges took part in the above-mentioned events.Eminent Scholars from various colleges were invited to adjudge the various events.
The Chief Guest Mr.V.Ramamurthy IAS (Retd.,) adorned the valedictory function held in the evening .He gave a profound and thought provoking insights on different literature. After his enlightened valedictory address, prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners of various events. SOUL 2008' concluded with Vote of thanks by the Secretary of SOUL Priyanka priyadarshini of II B.Sc. BT after the report submitted by HOD, Department of Languages.


BIOSYNERGY 2K8
was coducted by the department's of Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bio-tech and Bio-informatics on 20 th February 2008.

The inauguration was presided by Director of NCRM followed by the key note address by Prem C Marthandan. The Chief guest, Dr. Abraham Samuvel Albert gave a guest lecture in “Stem cell regenerative medicine”.

The valedictory function was presided by Dr.John Philips, IGCAR, who addressed the gathering followed by a special address by Dr. Daniel Chellappa the guest of honour.
Several competitions such as Paper presentation, Poster presentation, Bio Dumps, Debate, Jam, Quiz Essay writing- etc, were held. About 90 students from various colleges participated in the competitions


The ‘CATRICS ASSOCIATION' of Electronics & Communication Science Department conducted ‘ELECTRO JAZZ' an Inter Collegiate Technical Meet on 27.02.2008.
Dr. S. Ananthi B.E., M.Tech., Ph.D., Head, Central Instrumentation Department was the Chief Guest for the day. The inaugural session started with the unveiling of the ‘Electro Jazz' board by the Chief Guest. This was then followed by the welcome address by the Principal, Dr. Celcila Thangarajan . A special address was given by

the Vice-Principal, Mr. Samuel Sampath Kumar . The Chief Guest was then introduced by the Head of the Dept, Mrs. D. Jayanthi , which was then followed by the inaugural address by the chief Guest.
The Chief Guest in her inaugural address mentioned about the history, new realms of electronics and the career prospects for the students which proved to be very informative.
The inaugural session came to an end with a brief vote of thanks by Sreejish, a student of III ECS . The crowd then broke up for tea which was then followed by various technical competitions like Project Presentation, Bug & Debug, Quiz and Adzap in which around 150 students from 10 colleges participated. Students of New College bagged the first prize for their project titled ‘Surgical Unit' and ‘Smoke Detector' project done by students of Hindu College bagged the second prize . This event was then followed by Bug & Debug competition where students from Jaya College and Hindu College won the first and second places respectively. In the Quiz Competition , students from KRMMC and Mar Gregorious College won the 1 st and 2 nd place respectively. In the Ad-zap competition, Jaya College and New College won the first and second places respectively.
All the competitions came to an end which was then followed by the Valedictory Session. Dr. Susan Marthandan, Director, HCAS gave the Valedictory Address and gave away the prizes and certificates for the participants.

COSCIAN, the Computer Science Association conducted the state level Inter collegiate Technical meet on 22 nd February 2008.
Mr.Prabhjot Singh Samby, Infrastructure head, Polaris and Shri Kumar Menon, Assistant Manager-HR, Polaris, inaugurated the programme & had also consented to release the Annual magazine of the computer science department, INNOVA.
Various activities were conducted starting from interesting Quizzes to Web designing, Debugging &

Poster Presentation each of which allowed the participants to explore the depth of their skills. COSCIAN'08 saw a tremendous participation of about 350 students from 31 colleges of Chennai and Kanchipuram district.
All the events were conducted in two selection rounds, preliminaries & finals. This was followed by students from various colleges bagging prizes in each of the events.

The Department of Media Studies , Hindustan College of Arts & Science (HCAS)for the first time organized a two day a national level Inter – Collegiate Film Festival & Contest “IMPACT 2K8" on 28th & 29th of February at the South Indian Film Chamber , Chennai. Around 125 Short Films, Documentaries & Advt Films from 50 colleges across the nation participated in this festival

The best three films on each category were selected by an expert panel of jury consisting eminent Short Film maker & Editor Dr. Lenin , Mr. Robert Asirvatham , Popular Director & Mr. R T Anna Durai , Popular Director & Editor, Mr. Amshan Kumar , Popular Short Film maker. The Event was inaugurated by eminent Actress, Producer & Media entrepreneur

Mrs. Radhika Sarath Kumar by lighting the Kuthuvilakku. Dr. Cecilia Thangarajan, Principal, HCAS welcomed the gathering. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chairperson , Hindustan Group of Institutions (HGI) gave the presidential address and contributed a sum of Rs.50,000/- on behalf of Dr KCG Verghese charitable foundation for the event.

Mrs. Elizabeth stressed the need to stay alert against sensationalism and underlined the effect media has on our lives. Mrs. Radhika Sarath Kumar , Chief Guest of the event addressed the gathering. She encouraged the youth to stay rooted in their own culture instead of aping the west. She cautioned the students against getting carried and re-iterated the need for the students to look at their work objectively. Dr. Prem C. Marthandan , Director-Projects, delivered the felicitation address. The Screening was then started with a short film from the host college – Hindustan College of Arts & Science. The second day of the film festival started with the screening of the Documentaries & Advt Films. This successful film festival came to an end with the distribution of Dr KCG Varghese Memorial Award & Cash Prize to the best Short Film, Documentary Film & Advt Film Makers. Mr. Balu Mahendra, The eminent Director of Tamil Movies Awarded the student film makers - Dr KCG Memorial Award & a cash prize of Rs.10,000, Rs.5,000 & Rs.1,000 respectively for the first, second & third place of Short film & Documentary film makers - Rs 5,000, Rs.2,500 & Rs.1,000 for the first three winners of Advt Films. There were 125 entries for the film festival out of which 56 were short listed by the department of media studies. 33 short films, 10 documentaries, 13 Advt films were screened during this festival. National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, Manipal Institute of Communication, Annamalai University, Sathyabama University, Madras University, Cochin Media School, DKM College, PIMS College, Puducherry, L V Prasad Film Academy, PSG College, Coimbatore, Cheran Arts & Science College,Erode, MCC, Chennai, WCC, Asan memorial, Patrics College , New College , MGR College , St Thomas College , College of Fine Arts are some of the many colleges that participated in this major Nation Level Film Festival.
The Media partners for the event were Cinefundas.com & Hello FM. Other major Sponsors were Digital Magic.
Impact '08 conducted by Media Studies Department, has indeed made an impact among the students all over the nation. The association started with its International Film Festival where eminent speakers from the film industry shared their experiences with the Media Students. And within a two weeks span the association inaugurated its Short Film/Documentary Contest Screening at the Film Chamber, Royapettah were 70 entries reported, amidst the Chief Guest Mrs. Radhika Sharathkumar, who was extremely happy that this type of associations were existing in educational institutes. The jury consisting of three judges from the film industry, namely B. Lenin (Editor), Robert Aasirvadham (Director), Amshadkumar(Cameraman) proved to be the greatest asset for this function.
